MAAFL Match Guidelines for 2008:
These guidelines have been established to ensure that the traveling club is as competitive as possible and to ensure an even and fair playing field for the traveling club and the home club. American/Australian ratios have been developed to ensure the league continues to attract American athletes to the game while maintaining an excellent level of playing standard.
Minimum 14 players per side and 6 maximum interchange.
(14 players per side plus 6 interchange - 20 players) or
(16 players per side plus 6 interchange - 22 players) or
(18 players per side plus 6 interchange - 24 players).
Away Club decides players per side - the away team must have at least 4 interchange to play 16 per side or 18 per side.
(14 players per side plus at least 4 interchange for away team).
(16 players per side plus at least 4 interchange for away team).
(18 players per side plus at least 4 interchange for away team).
The appointed representative of each club can meet and discuss the number of players per side (or arrange in advance) - but it is the away Club's final decision on numbers to be played. The home club may assist the away club with additional players to assist in numbers - but the role of the away club within the MAAFL is to field a competitive club that can compete to win on the road. Getting as many home players a run is a secondary consideration to ensuring each Club on the road is competitive.
60 % non Australians on field at all times.
(14 players - 9 Americans - 5 Australians on the field)
(16 players - 10 Americans - 6 Australians on the field)
(18 players - 11 Americans - 7 Australians on the field)
To assist with ensuring the integrity of this guideline each Club is asked to have the Australian Players wear black bands on their left arm for identification purposes. The FIELD UMPIRE will verify arm bands are on all Australian players before the start of each game and the Captains of each team CAN TWICE within a match request a player count at any time during the course of a match. If a club is found to be playing above their Australian player ratio the penalty will result in the complete removal of the score of the club playing above the Australian ratio. There is no penalty to the requesting club if the ratio is found to be accurate.
4 * 20 minute quarters.
5 Minutes Halves for Over Time. (until winner is determined).
